The port occupies a unique position in the inland waterway system due to its strategic location. However, problems exist related to utilization of the riverbank area for industrial or commercial development and to the permit procedure of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, who are responsible for maintenance of most of the system. The fleeting operations in the port area are briefly discussed, and several possible future strategies are offered. (Author)
