It begins with a look at embracing uncertainty in hydrology patterns. The National Cooperative Highway Research Program (NCHRP) Project 15-61, "Applying Climate Change Information to Hydrologic and Hydraulic Design of Transportation Infrastructure" explores techniques for estimating precipitation and incorporates historical uncertainty in its projections. Next, the need for innovation in design-based guidance of temporary erosion and sediment controls is discussed. Finally, innovation in research is highlighted with a look at the Auburn University–Erosion and Sediment Control Testing Facility (AU-ESCTF). AU-ESCTF researchers have investigated performance and optimized the design and installation of ditch checks, inlet protection practices, sediment barriers, sediment basins, and erosion control practices.
