Abstract:

The study presented in Transit Cooperative Research Program (TCRP) Research Report 195, Broadening the Understanding of the Interplay Among Public Transit, Shared Mobility, and Personal Automobiles, examined trip data from transportation network companies (TNCs) in major U.S. cities, as well as surveys from thousands of transit and shared mobility users nationwide, to uncover insights into the demographic and other characteristics of TNC trips. This article discusses the study sources and regions, when TNC trips take place, trip lengths, trip frequency, the role of airports, and impacts on other transportation modes. The study found that the highest levels of TNC use are concentrated in core areas and near airports; the single top origin-destination flow is within a single zip code; heaviest use is during evening hours and weekends; and TNCs are used by people in communities across the socioeconomic spectrum.
