Abstract:

In adjacent beam bridge construction, prestressed concrete box beams, which are constructed with solid end blocks and interior diaphragms, are commonly used today. However, recent changes in specifications for the design of highway bridges have eliminated the requirement for diaphragms for prestressed box bridges. Many advantages would result from their elimination. This study was conducted to determine the contribution of end blocks and interior diaphragms to the torsional rigidity and to determine the effect of bending, torsion, and shear on through-voided prestressed concrete box beams at working and ultimate loads. Testing of four full-scale prestressed concrete box beams to failure showed that end blocks and interior diaphragms can be eliminated from straight prestressed concrete box beams without significantly affecting the performance. The study also showed that the behavior of the beams can be adequately predicted by using existing theoretical methods. (Authors)
