The case study areas were Baltimore City and Baltimore County, Maryland; Chicago and Cook County, Illinois; Houston and Harris County, Texas; and Phoenix and Maricopa County, Arizona. Discussions at the workshops were organized around four areas: built and natural environments; social impacts; the information used to understand or communicate flood events; and steps and policies for decision-making and managing flooding. A report was produced incorporating workshop discussions and this article presents report highlights related to urban flooding and transportation. Topics include defining urban flooding, types of urban flooding impacts, and communicating urban flood hazard and flood risk. Key needs identified in the case studies include developing a methodology for analyzing urban flood hazard and investing in research to understand social impacts and effective interventions.
