Travel time reliability is an important attribute for measuring the effectiveness of the existing private and public transportation systems. The evolution of travel time reliability has laid foundation for carrying out the performance evaluation of any facility using reliability measures apart from traditional measure, Level of Service (LOS). The United States Department of Transportation proposed four different travel time reliability measures. They are the planning time (PT), planning time index (PTI), buffer time (BT), and buffer time index (BTI). Very few research works have been carried out considering travel time reliability for bus transit systems especially under Indian conditions. The present study attempts to analyze bus travel time variation with respect to space and time for different type of segments like uninterrupted segments, segments with intersections, and segments with intersections and bus stops for selected Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) route in Surat city of India. Effective reliability measures are identified based on clustering technique and these measures are classified into different clusters, which can be used as benchmarking for performance evaluation in terms of travel time reliability. Also, the effect of different factors like period of the day, day of the week, land use, the number of intersections, delay, and the number of bus stops on travel time variability is studied through the development of a regression model.
