Availability: Find a library where document is available Abstract: The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine (NASEM) hosted a workshop in September 2017 to improve understanding of the built environment in preventing and treating obesity and to discuss promising strategies for healthier, more equitable environments. This article highlights workshop presentations including: (1) the health impacts of street connectivity, traffic, and access to mass transit; (2) North Carolina's inclusion of walkability audits and park access audits in the long range planning process and implementation of shared- and open-use policies; (3) Nashville Area Metropolitan Planning Organization's development of a regional transportation plan taking health impacts into consideration and focusing on walking and bicycling facilities and Complete Streets projects; (4) the challenge walkers and bicyclists face in rural areas of Montana; and (5) the integration of play and playgrounds.
