Title: Causes of Concrete Crosstie Rail Seat Negative Bending Moments
Accession Number: 01698376
Record Type: Component
Abstract: Maintaining safe railway operation requires proper design of its components. Optimization of the design of specific railway infrastructure components requires a comprehensive understanding of their service demands. This is especially important for concrete crossties, and relies on quantifying their bending behavior. Discussions of current concrete crosstie design criteria have largely focused on center negative and rail seat positive bending moments. Rail seat negative bending moments, however, have been observed in the field but are rarely discussed in practice. Current rail seat negative bending moment design recommendations are either non-existent or use a factor to include a portion of rail seat positive bending moment design thresholds. Recent field experimentation has used concrete crosstie surface strain gauges to measure rail seat negative bending moments under revenue service operation. Therefore, it is important to conduct a holistic study of rail seat negative bending moments to improve current design recommendations. To accomplish this, researchers at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC) are analyzing field data to better understand the factors influencing and causes of rail seat negative bending moments. Results from the field experimentation show high variability of rail seat negative bending moments resulting from changes in train operations, ballast support conditions, and other variables. An improved understanding of rail seat negative bending moments will ultimately advance the future development of concrete crossties that are optimally designed.
