Abstract:

The objective of this study is to evaluate the effects of the sharing economy and autonomous vehicle technologies on vehicle ownership. The study first focuses on evaluating effects of the income generation potential of household vehicles, which traditionally have been used primarily for personal travel, on vehicle transaction decisions. The rapid spread of ridesourcing and other app-based services has enabled many individuals to transition from personal-only to mixed personal-commercial uses of household vehicles. This study hypothesizes that this new accessibility of income generation potential using household vehicles affects the propensity of individuals to buy or sell household vehicles. The study further addresses questions relating to household vehicle transaction decisions in a future context where both sharing economy and autonomous travel options are available. Specifically, it studies the effects of autonomous vehicle (AV) purchase and AV fleet sharing options on the vehicle transaction decision. The effect of AV income generation potential is examined here as a combination of AV and sharing economy effects. An original survey was designed and administered to collect the necessary data. Using econometric modeling techniques, the study found statistically significant effects of sharing economy, AV, and mixed sharing economy-AV technologies on vehicle transaction decisions. The potential to generate revenue using a household vehicle was found to reduce an individual’s disposition to selling a vehicle in an income reduction scenario, while earning potential of AVs had a positive impact on the individual’s preference in purchasing an AV relative to using conventional vehicles or AV share options.
