Abstract:

Public Transportation (PT) offers efficient and affordable transportation and contributes to reduced congestion and air pollution. PT systems must provide a continuous accessibility and connectivity for passengers, otherwise these aforementioned advantages cannot be achieved. The aim of this work is twofold. First, to develop a connectivity assessment tool which is based on a minimal number of data sources, which are usually freely available. Second, to provide the public with a tool to assess the impact of routes and timetables change on the level-of-service, hence bridging the gap between researchers, policy makers and the public. The developed model relies on two data sources; a) data based on the General Transit Feed specification (GTFS), a common framework for exchanging PT data, which is used by numerous authorities, and b) census data. Based on these two data sources, the developed tool can assess the spatial and temporal change in the level-of-service related to routes and time tables change. The tool capabilities are demonstrated with a real-world case study of the PT system of Jerusalem, Israel. The results confirm that PT users, as well as non-government organizations can independently assess the connectivity and connectivity change at the municipal, regional, and state levels, and therefore, can influence the authorities to adjust the PT planning according to the residents’ needs.
