Availability: Find a library where document is available Abstract: In this article, three case studies highlight the use of design-build (DB) best practices including effective design management, transparency in the procurement process, and use of alternative technical concepts (ATCs). It begins with a look at Maryland's Intercounty Connector project, an 18-mile, six-lane toll highway. Four separate DB teams were awarded contracts based on requests for proposals (RFPs) that were required to include a systematic design management process. Design management procedures and processes defined in each RFP set the stage for the successful completion of the design. Next, Florida Department of Transportation's (Florida DOT's) procurement process is described. The process includes development of an alternative contracting task team; standardization of RFPs and scope-of-work packages across the state; and open dialogue with DB teams before initiating procurement and after selection. The article concludes with a look at the history of DB contracting and the ATC process at Virginia DOT.
