When the Bus Regulatory Reform Act of 1982 was enacted, carriers could, for the first time since 1935, freely add or cut routes and raise or lower rates on interstate routes without Interstate Commerce Commission approval. New pricing and operational freedoms, however, were not enough to stall declining bus travel. Perceptions of bus travel, competition with other transportation modes, and persistent intrastate regulation contributed to the decline. Only in recent years, with the onset of technological advances such as smartphones, online ticketing, and curbside service, has the industry begun to revitalize.
