Availability: Find a library where document is available Abstract: This brief article, an excerpt from a longer essay, discusses the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) Act of 1966 and its impact on transportation policy regulation. At the time of the 1966 act, different agencies regulated different modes of transportation. Mode-specific regulatory agencies included the Interstate Commerce Commission (trucking and rail), the Civil Aeronautics Board (aviation), and the Federal Maritime Commission (ocean shipping). During its first three years of existence DOT intervened in 72 regulatory proceedings advocating for a more efficient, coordinated, and rational approach to transportation regulation. Those interventions cumulatively exerted a profound impact on the regulating agencies and, ultimately, on regulation itself.
