It highlights transportation as a separate determinant of health, because transportation has many health-related facets, such as pollution and greenhouse gas production, motor vehicle–related deaths and injuries, mobility and access to employment and to vital goods and services, and active transportation. The report considers transportation in terms of the network, services, and infrastructure that provide residents with the means to get from one place to another and to access goods, services—including health and social services—social networks, and employment. The report identifies three elements critical to community success: multisector collaboration, health equity as a shared vision and value, and community capacity to shape outcomes. Solutions implemented in several communities serve as models that other communities may adapt, applying lessons learned to foster community-based approaches in their own unique environments. A look at the Nashville Metropolitan Planning Organization and their use of transportation projects to promote health and sustainability is included in this article.
