Abstract:

Typically, equity efforts to improve bike share to be “for all” have targeted low-income populations and people of color. One segment of the population that has often been overlooked that of older-adults, people 65 years old and older. This paper used a sample of people of color 55 years of age and older (n=532) from a larger survey of residents in low-income communities of color served by bike share in Chicago, IL, Philadelphia, PA, and Brooklyn, NY to determine what opportunities exist to include older adults of color in bike share systems. The authors analyzed differences in opinions and barriers to bicycling and bike share, efficacy of bike share program changes, and reasons to use bike share by age group by their physical ability to ride a bike, their willingness to ride a bike, when they last rode a bike, and their likelihood to ride a bike share bike in the next 6 months. Results indicated that while only 3% of those +55 years and older had ridden a bike share bike, nearly a quarter expressed interest in riding one in the near future. Older-adults from the authors' sample indicated that some may be persuaded to ride bike share with the changes being implemented to improve access to low-income populations and people of color. Others still need additional changes to be implemented such as classes on how to ride a bike and availability of alternative bikes, such as trikes, before they will ride a bike share bike.
