Title: Comparison of US and Chinese Bridge Design Standards for Local Scour Estimation of Bridges Piers
Accession Number: 01659545
Record Type: Component
Abstract: This paper presents a comparison study between the design methods for bridge scour used in the engineering practice in the U.S. and China. The influence of flow structure, pier diameter, and sediment size on scour development was firstly analyzed. The design method widely used in the U.S., i.e., the HEC-18 equation, and the design equation by the Chinese national bridge designs standard were compared by use of field data. In total, 796 data collected from field projects have been used to evaluate the accuracy of scour estimation models. Advantages and limitations of these standard scour prediction formulas are discussed. Existing models used by US and China design standards are found to perform unsatisfactorily, especially for large diameter piers. Under such conditions, the equations by the US and Chinese design standards tend to significantly overestimate the scour depth.
