Abstract: Pavement structural condition evaluation is an important consideration in assessing rehabilitation needs and for making prudent investment decisions. Deflection testing represents the most commonly used pavement structural condition evaluation technique. For asphalt concrete (AC) pavements, Surface Curvature Index (SCI), measured from deflection devices is a widely-used index for assessing the structural condition of the AC layers, especially at the network level. Since asphalt stiffness is temperature sensitive, measured deflections and SCI are affected by pavement temperature at the time of deflection measurements. For consistent pavement evaluation across sections and time, SCI should be adjusted to a reference temperature. Several models for adjusting SCI to a reference temperature have been proposed and most are based on experimental data and locally-calibrated parameters. The accuracy of these models depends on the range of asphalt layer properties covered in the database. In this paper, a parametric study with a viscoelastic (VE) model was conducted to realize the efficacy of those models in wider range of asphalt pavement structures. The temperature adjustment factors from various models were compared with the VE model, and the model that showed the least difference with the VE parametric study was selected for field validation. Falling Weight Deflectometer and Traffic Speed Deflectometer data from the Long-Term Pavement Performance program sections and MnROAD facility near Maplewood, Minnesota were used in validating the selected temperature correction model. The results showed that the selected model can reasonably correct SCI to a reference temperature which would enable its use in pavement management activities.
