Title: The Use of Lime Sludge Alone and with Class C Fly Ash for Subgrade Soil Stabilization
Accession Number: 01657874
Record Type: Component
Abstract: Locally available soils are generally used as subgrade layer materials to decrease the construction cost. However, most of these soils do not perform well. Low quality local soils can be turned into better materials by improving their engineering properties via chemical soil stabilization. Class C fly ash has been used for chemical soil stabilization for a very long time. However, its popularity in the cement industry sometimes affects its availability and causes temporary shortages. In this research, lime sludge obtained from a water treatment plant was investigated as an alternative stabilizer due to the benefits of using waste materials and the uncertain future of class C fly ash. For this purpose, lime sludge was used alone and with class C fly ash to stabilize silty loess soil which is locally available in the State of Iowa. Unconfined compressive strength (UCS) and freeze-thaw (F-T) tests were conducted. The UCS test results of the specimens that were cured up to 90 days showed that lime sludge can be used alone to increase the strength of loess soil. The UCS test results of 7-day cured specimens pointed out that lime sludge can be mixed with class C fly ash to increase the strength of loess soil. However, F-T test results showed that there were no considerable benefits of using lime sludge either alone or with class C fly ash to increase the durability of loess soil against F-T action.
