Abstract:

Dimension limestone is one of the most globally used construction material and its mining and polishing operations produce large amount of stone and slurry wastes. This study investigated the possibility of using waste slurry dust of Indian dimension limestone (viz. Kota stone) in place of conventional stone dust as filler in asphalt concrete mixes. Physical characterization of fillers is done using specific gravity, particle size distribution and German filler tests. Quantity and quality of clay were assessed using plasticity index and methylene blue value tests. Morphological and mineralogical analyses were done using Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) and X-Ray Diffraction (XRD) techniques. Also, affinity of materials towards asphalt was assessed using pH value and hydrophilic coefficient tests. Asphalt concrete mixes containing Kota stone dust and conventional stone dust were prepared and Optimum Asphalt Contents (OAC) were determined. At OAC, mechanical properties of both mixes were assessed by conducting Marshall Stability, Marshall Quotient and Indirect Tensile Strength tests. Moisture susceptibility, active adhesion, passive adhesion, resistance against ravelling and against long term aging were inspected by determining Tensile Strength Ratio (TSR), mixing time analysis, boiling water test, Cantabro test and Mean Marshall Stability Ratio (MMSR), respectively. In comparison to stone dust mixes, Kota stone mixes not only found to have lower OAC, but also displayed superior strengths and resistances against permanent deformation, cracking, ravelling and long term aging. They also had shown good active and passive adhesion as well as satisfactory resistance against moisture permeation.
