Title: Low-Speed Skid Resistance Testing for Airport Runway Pavement
Accession Number: 01659007
Record Type: Component
Abstract: Standard skid resistance tests of runway pavements are conducted at either 65 or 95 km/h to assess pavement skid resistance for safe aircraft operations. However, when skid resistance is found inadequate, the high-speed skid resistance measurements alone would not provide information sufficient to determine the actual cause of the problem. A useful additional information is the low-speed skid resistance of the pavement concerned. The British Pendulum Tester (BPT) and the Dynamic Friction Tester (DFT) are two commonly used devices for low-speed skid resistance measurement. Unfortunately, they are unsuitable for measuring skid resistance on grooved pavements due to their mode of testing. This paper presents a Walking Friction Tester (WFT) developed to overcome the limitation in measuring low-speed runway pavement skid resistance. To illustrate the suitability of WFT for this purpose, laboratory skid resistance tests were conducted on grooved asphalt and concrete slab specimens using both BPT and WFT. DFT was excluded because of its inability to measure directional skid resistance. Two types of grooves were tested, namely the standard FAA square groove and a trapezoidal groove. It was found that WFT produced more consistent measurements than BPT with smaller coefficient of variation values. A field test was also conducted to compare the time of skid resistance measurements by the two devices. It was demonstrated that WFT is a more practical and suitable tool than BPT because it can provide more reliable measurements, and a continuous record of measurements for a pavement section within a reasonable length of time.
