Abstract:

Vehicles entering a controlled-access facility in the wrong direction pose one of the most serious safety problems in any roadway system. Wrong-way crashes often result in death and injury to those involved. Research to date has concentrated on more traditional countermeasures such as pavement markings and signing, which have shown limited effectiveness in evaluations. The emergence of connected vehicle technology is seen as the next significant hope for making a substantial gain in enhancing the safety of the traveling public. Connected vehicle systems will be able to broadcast wrong-way driving event information through roadside equipment and by propagating messages vehicle to vehicle. The exact wording and content of those messages is the topic this study conducted to identify information needs of right-way drivers when encountering a wrong-way driving event. Researchers administered short surveys using tablet computers to 360 drivers in three cities in Texas. The survey asked about specific wording of messages that would be conveyed through in-vehicle audio systems or display screens to alert drivers of wrong-way driving incidents. The results showed that some drivers may interpret in-vehicle messages to mean that they themselves are driving the wrong way.
