Title: Safety and Serviceability Issues with the Bus Rapid Transit Systems: The Istanbul Experience
Accession Number: 01657925
Record Type: Component
Abstract: Bus rapid transit services maximize the capacity of mass transit serviced by buses. Dedicated transit ways, specially designed stations and buses, customized fare collection methods and dispatch management are instrumental to achieve this capacity maximization. The increased mass transit capacity provided by the bus rapid transit services are comparable to transit capacities provided by light rail transit systems. Their lower infrastructure cost and their perceived simplicity of implementation favor the adoption of bus rapid transit by municipalities for mass transit in increasing number of cities around the world. Bus rapid transit systems provide a fast and effective solution to increased transit demand that surpass the limits of ordinary bus services in mixed traffic. However, the decision to implement bus rapid transit as a solution to satisfy the transit needs of a city requires care and caution. This study qualitatively evaluates some safety issues of the bus rapid transit. The study investigates the particular types and frequencies of accidents and service failures experienced in the bus rapid transit service in Istanbul since its inauguration.
