Abstract:

An understanding of the connections between social capital and transportation is crucial for planning and policy development for community resilience. The concept of social capital reflects trust, the convergence of shared values in a community, and the importance of social connections for achieving mutual goals. This article looks at the role of social capital in a community's disaster preparedness, response, and recovery. It looks at the impacts of social capital during Hurricane Katrina and highlights recent research findings on the social effects of transportation systems. It suggests that providing safe, reliable, and efficient public transportation that promotes social capital is one way to enhance community resilience.
