Abstract:

This study was to analyze the shuttle operations at Zion National Park, near Springdale, Utah, using an origin-destination (OD) study. This study was performed for the National Park Service (NPS) to obtain trip-making characteristics of vehicles and shuttle riders at Zion National Park (Zion NP). Zion NP is located in Southwest Utah, and is known as one of the “Big 5” of Utah’s National Parks. Daily attendance has grown considerably over the past two decades, and the trend is expected to continue. There is a high-level of crowding on the shuttle system that supports the park. Zion has invested in several studies for recommendations to improve operations. For this study, the application of Origin-Destination data using Wi-Fi data collection was a first for the NPS. The purpose of this report was to summarize the Wi-Fi data collection approach, data collected, findings and applicability to other parks in the National Service system. The study found that Wi-Fi tracking was successful in collecting origin-destination data, and appears to be applicable for other park applications.
