Title: Incinerator Bottom Ash as Unbound Subbase and Base
Accession Number: 01628827
Record Type: Component
Abstract: In Denmark Incinerator Bottom Ash (IBA) has been used as subsoil and unbound subbase since the mid-1980s. Studies have shown that IBA is better than what is to be expected from the laboratory test results. To gain more knowledge about IBA a test field with IBA was constructed in 2012. The test field is a part of a new road which gives access to an expansion of the harbor in Copenhagen. The test field was divided into four test sections, where IBA is used as unbound subbase and unbound base together with sand and gravel for unbound base (BL II) and gravel for unbound base (SG II). Since the construction of the test field, the bearing capacity and rutting have been measured twice a year for the first two years, and afterwards once a year. The test field shows that IBA can be used as both unbound subbase and unbound base, at a traffic load of 91,000 Æ10 per year with a design period of 20 years or 182,000 Æ10 per year with a design period of 10 years. The highest E-modulus of the joined layer of unbound subbase and unbound base is found in the test section where BL II is used as unbound subbase and IBA is used as unbound base. This indicates it would be better to use IBA as unbound base and not as unbound subbase as it is done today.
