Abstract:

Traditional taxi companies in China have less favor to innovation and their services cannot meet the variable public demands due to the current regulations and their monopolies on the market. At the meantime, Ridesharing companies driven by information and communication technology (ICT) have taken the taxi market by storm. The object of this research is to find solutions integrated with innovations to create a sustainable taxi industry in China. Both the development of traditional taxi and ridesharing service in China were examined from different aspects. The analysis identified that most of the Chinese people and authorities consider the ridesharing as a complementary mode of traditional taxi industry due to its profit motivation. A stated preference/revealed preference (SP/RP) online taxi market survey was conducted for passengers, drivers and vehicles. The survey data suggests that the middle-class workers are the main consumers in ridesharing service. Convenience and excellent service are the main reasons for respondents to choose ridesharing service currently in China. Although the legitimacy of the ridesharing service is temporarily not widely recognized; most people are still confident in its development in China. From the survey of drivers and vehicles, the authors can also find drawbacks of ridesharing service as lack of the on-spot-check of the ridesharing drivers and vehicles. Based on the survey results and problem identification of the development of the Chinese taxi industry, five theoretical principle solutions to the sustainable taxi industry were proposed. Interim regulation separately published by Shanghai government and central government was analyzed. the analysis results suggest that many further research and legislation works need to be conducted with the integration of innovation.
