Abstract:

Georgia Tech Geosystems obtained the 2 cm² Pagani mini-piezocone on loan from Dr. Barry Christopher in May 2015. As part of an independent study (CEE 8900) at Georgia Tech, for Dr. Mayne, J. Tyler Wood’s task was to make the mini piezocone operational and perform successful soundings with the given equipment. A total of seven (7) tests, which included five (5) soundings, were performed during the Summer 2015 independent study. Based upon the soundings performed during the independent study, the following recommendations are given to improve and/or modify the mini-piezocone equipment and interfaces: (1) Improvement of the vice used in securing piezocone rods. The vice slipped under nominal tip pressures (less than 5 MPa). (2) Placement of a friction reducer on the cone itself. The placement of a friction reducer on the cone may alleviate vice problems experienced during sounding. (3) Further software development of the data retrieval program. Pagani provides free software to download and extract the test data from the TGAS07B. Difficulty was experienced when attempting to open the “.cpt” files in the software program. The program was downloaded multiple times on multiple computers and a similar error was encountered. (4) No pressure gauge for the hydraulic pump is available. There is no way for the operator to observe the load of the pump and/or ram during operation. (5) Improvement of the reaction frame. The reaction frame will require either anchors for soundings in stiff subsurface materials, or alternatively a dead weight reaction system.
