Title: Development and Evaluation of a Smartphone-based Curve-speed Warning System for Heavy Duty Vehicles

Record Type: Component
Abstract: The use of heavy duty vehicles (HDVs) for the movement of goods is one of the most important economic activities. The risk of fatal accidents involving HDVs is 2.4 times higher than that involving only light vehicles. Meanwhile, there are five times more accidents on roadway curves than on straight roadways. An advanced curve-speed warning system (CSWS) using smartphones has been developed and tested using a field experiment in moving vehicles to improve the safety of HDVs. In this system, curve-speed warning models are used to assess vehicle safety. A vehicle dynamics model with an aerodynamic draft effect is established by considering rollover and sideslip that are used to evaluate safety status of the HDVs on roadway curves. The built-in curve radius calculating algorithm adequately calculates the radius of curves in front of the vehicles. A field evaluation of the system shows that the system can obtain digital maps, vehicle speed, vehicle center of gravity (CG) height and curve radius information in a dynamic, real-time interface using smartphones. Compared with the same scenario without the warning system, the vehicular lateral acceleration significantly decreases when the vehicle travels on a dangerous curve using the warning system.
