Abstract:

Although transportation studies widely use various accessibility measures to explain travel behavior, most of these measures are applied to elaborate on motorized modes of travel. This paper investigates two location-based accessibility measures, gravity-based and utility-based measures, particularly for trips made on foot. While, majority of current studies which are interested in walking, rely merely on gravity-based accessibility measure, here the utility-based measure is taken into account additionally. Development of accessibility measures, illustrates different aspects of urban walking accessibility. The objective of this paper is to develop and compare the two aforementioned accessibility measures to find the one which better explains walking behavior in the real case of the city of Rasht, Iran. To develop a gravity-based accessibility measure,a number of impedance functions are investigated and an exponential form is selected based on its most explanatory power. Furthermore,a utility-based accessibility measure is developed by calibrating a walking destination choice model. It takes into account an array of built environment variables, extracted from the literature. The correlation test is conducted to elaborate on the relation between real walking and the derived accessibility measures. Results show that utility-based measure provides better understanding of walking behavior because of greater correlation coefficient and also more significant one. In conclusion, these measures’ benefits are explicated so that they can assist transportation planners to make robust decisions for developing walking transportation.
