Title: Influence of Temperature on Bus Driver Mood State, Reaction Ability, and At-fault Accident Risk

Record Type: Component
Abstract: High temperatures can affect bus drivers’ mood states, reaction ability, and even increase the risk of accident. POMS scale is used to measure the effect of temperature on mood. Reaction ability is evaluated by testing speed anticipation, choice reaction and action judgment. At-fault accident risk is analyzed by estimating a logit model. Data for the analysis are from questionnaire survey and instrument test in Harbin from July to October in 2014. 680 bus drivers participate in the investigation and 654 questionnaires and 605 test data are collected. The results show that bus drivers do not display apparent negative emotions (tension, depression, angry and confusion) except fatigue under different temperatures, but these mood states increase with temperature. The ability of speed estimation, reaction time and action judgment significantly decreases with the increase of temperature. There is no significant difference of the number of choice error during different temperatures. The factors of age (55-60 years old), driving experience (>5 years), continuous work time, confusion, the number of reaction error, the number of judgment error, and temperature (>35° C) are significantly correlated to at-fault accident. The findings of the current study provide a comprehensive picture of bus drivers’ response at high temperatures and could help to take targeted measures to reduce the negative impact of heat exposure.
