Title:

Can Pavement Testing Be Used As Acoustic Parameter Surrogates?

Abstract:

This paper examines the efforts of a continuing project in Florida on the measurement and analysis of pavement surface texture as related to sound. Wayside measurements were made in conjunction with On-Board Sound Intensity (OBSI) measurements to form matched pairs of results. The OBSI measurement was used to measure sound intensity from different pavement surface textures using the Florida Department of Transportation Test Trailer. The concurrent wayside measurements were made using standard practices. Results for rigid pavements, dense graded and open graded pavements are included. Wayside rankings are compared to the surface texture rankings, and analysis by both amplitude and frequency are used to determine a simple "transfer function” to determine the difference in measurement amplitude. A first order approximation as well as an idea for a more advanced methodology are presented to use OBSI measurements to predict wayside levels.
