Abstract: Transportation is one of the requisites of sustainable development of rural areas. This requisite seems to be more important in developing countries as nearly half of the population in these countries reside in rural areas. Although the importance of this issue is bold in rural areas, there are not many studies in this regard. Thus, still little is known about the activity and travel characteristics of rural residents. This study focuses on developing the comprehensive framework to model disaggregate travel demand of rural residents based on daily activity-travel pattern and application of this framework to estimate the transportation decisions. In this regard, the daily activity-travel pattern is decomposed to five hierarchical decision steps including: (a) primary activity-location pattern, (b) primary time of day-mode, (c) secondary activity-location, (d) secondary time of day, and (e) secondary mode. The decisions in each step and the relations between them are estimated by using logit models. An interview place-based questionnaire was designed and data about activity-travel characteristics of rural residents in four villages in Iran was collected. In total, 663 respondents, in two types of villages, near to city and far from it, were used for modeling daily activity-travel pattern. The proposed framework and results are emphasized on the relations between hierarchical decisions in rural daily activity-travel patterns. The type of village, and the activity location choice have strong effects on other decisions in daily activity-travel pattern.
