Abstract:

The "Engineering VOLunteers for Ninth Graders” (eVOL9), a summer educational and experiential learning program for rising ninth grade students, was organized by the College of Engineering at the University of Tennessee. The purpose of eVOL9 is to provide rising 9th grade students an awareness of engineering career opportunities and also to prepare these students for college. This paper summarizes the efforts on the transportation engineering section of the eVOL9 program in June 2015. The program aimed to not only alert, engage, motivate, and excite the participants about some aspects of transportation engineering, but also to provide an avenue for road safety education for teenagers, the highest crash risk age group. The primary foci of the transportation-based projects were first to introduce young minds to aspects of transportation engineering, particularly on how human and vehicle factors impact the design and operation of roadways and secondly, to educate teenagers on why road safety should be of value and priority to them. To assess the impact of the transportation engineering section of the eVOL9 program, online surveys and in-class tests before and after eVOL9 were carried out. Results of the evaluations showed a positive impact on the 30 high school students who participated in the program. This program offers significant promise and can be replicated at other settings by adapting this program.
