Abstract:

Like most states, Oregon provides motorcycle safety courses to the public. For more than 30 years, basic rider training courses have paired traditional, instructor-led classroom with on-cycle exercises to teach the basic skills necessary for safe and responsible motorcycle operation. Unlike most states, Oregon uses its own proprietary training curricula, and rider training in Oregon is mandatory. In 2010-2014, Oregon developed an online classroom to replace the traditional classroom used in its rider training courses. The new classroom, called eRider™, is not an online workbook or copy of the existing classroom, but a brand-new curriculum informed by National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) Model National Standards for Entry-Level Motorcycle Rider Training, state-specific priorities, crash causes, and trends. A 2014 field test compared courses using online classroom to those using traditional classroom. In all, 1,086 new and returning riders participated – 440 in the online group and 646 in the traditional group. Variables of interest were student end-of course evaluation scores, pre- post survey scores, course completion status, knowledge test scores and skill test scores. The field test demonstrated that eRider™ requires 34 percent less time to complete while meeting or exceeding the instructional standard set by the traditional classroom. Motorcycle and driver safety training instructors, providers, or program managers may benefit from hybrid or computer-based training courses using the eRider™ instructional model.
