Title: Optimizing the Service Area and Trip Selection of Electric Automated Taxis Used for the Last Mile of Train Trips

Record Type: Component
Abstract: In this paper, the authors propose a mathematical model to optimize the location of service zones and trip selection of a transport system with automated taxis (ATs) which serves the first/last mile connection of train trips. They consider a city divided into several areas, each of which can be seen as a potential service zone. The service provided by this system includes taking passengers who have finished their train trips to the final destination (egress) or to the train station from the origin (access). They consider the vehicles to be electric which means that charging time has to be taken into consideration as a constraint. At the same time, because taxis are automated, it is possible for them to relocate without a driver. The model is formulated as an integer programming problem whose objective is to maximize daily profit. With the reservation requests being known a priori, the model can indicate the satisfied demand and the number and location of service zones that lead to a more profitable system. The model was applied to the Delft Zuid train station in the Netherlands. Results indicate that fleet size is an important factor on the profitability of the taxi system. In addition, zone location and trip selection are able to diminish the negative impacts of taxi imbalance, however the system should never accept all the requests if it searches solely for profit maximization.
