Abstract:

The Nashville Area Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO) has addressed chronic public health problems stemming from physical inactivity by shifting the transportation policy focus to public transit, walking, and bicycling. This shift in policy focus has led to a shift in fund allocation as well. This article talks about the approach taken by the MPO including conducting surveys, devising a scoring and selection system for transportation projects, focusing on equity, collecting data on household health attributes, and predicting health outcomes and health care cost savings.
