Abstract:

This article reports on the first-ever sponsored conference held by the Transportation Research Board's Standing Committee on Transportation Needs of National Parks and Public Lands. The Conference on Transportation and Federal Lands: Enhancing Access, Mobility, Sustainability, and Connections was held in Washington, D.C. on September 15-17, 2014. Its 140 participants represented a spectrum of agencies and organizations, including the U.S. Department of Transportation, the National Park Service, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, universities, and consulting firms. A variety of transportation issues associated with national parks and public lands, including transit innovation, intelligent transportation systems, smartphone apps, bicycle facilities and multiuse trails, provided the topics for the conference's more than 50 presentations and 13 breakout sessions.
