Availability: Find a library where document is available Abstract: Over the next decade transportation agencies throughout the world will be transitioning from 2D paper-based mapping to 3D digital models, reflecting a major shift in the geospatial industry. This shift will significantly impact transportation engineering in such areas as highway design with computer-assisted design and highway construction with 3D model-based design. In this article, the authors report research findings related to these rapid industry changes, including those delivered in the 2013 National Cooperative Highway Research Program (NCHRP) Synthesis Report 446, entitled "Use of Advanced Geospatial Data, Tools, Technologies and Information in Department of Transportation Projects." Further report data was gathered from U.S. transportation agencies to examine the use of geospatial information and technologies in transportation applications. The research revealed the strengths and weaknesses of the technologies as well as the organizational and human factors involved with their adoption. This article also highlights NCHRP report 748, entitled "Guidelines for the Use of Mobile LiDAR in Transportation Applications," which addresses one of the most important 3D geospatial technologies for transportation agencies over the next decade.
