In July 2013, the National Cooperative Highway Research Program (NCHRP) published a synthesis project entitled Active Traffic Management for Arterials, which provides an overview of strategies associated with designing, implementing, and operating active traffic management (ATM) on arterials. This article describes the project and details a number of its findings. The survey revealed challenges to ATM project implementation, and the article identifies particular areas where additional research is needed.
