Title: PLANNING AND DESIGN INNOVATIONS OR HOW TO MAKE A FREEWAY A GOOD NEIGHBOR
Accession Number: 00243057
Record Type: Component
Availability: Find a library where document is available Abstract: SOME LONG-TERM SOLUTIONS, RATHER THAN STOP-GAP MEASURES, ARE SUGGESTED. HIGHWAY LOCATION THROUGH HIGH-PRICED PROPERTY WOULD EASE COMMUNITY DISRUPTION BY DISPLACING FEWER PEOPLE WHO, BEING AFFLUENT, COULD MORE EASILY RELOCATE. BY ASSURING COMMERCIAL DEVELOPMENT UNDER VIADUCTS, PLANNERS COULD RETURN LAND TO THE TAX ROLLS, MEET AESTHETIC OBJECTIONS, AND REDUCE COSTS (SINCE SHORTER SPANS COULD BE USED). PUTTING FREEWAYS AND RAPID TRANSIT SYSTEMS ON THE SAME RIGHT-OF-WAY WOULD ALSO EASE COMMUNITY IMPACT. SEMI-CANTILEVER WIDENING SAVES MONEY AND MINIMIZES TRAFFIC DISRUPTION. VEHICLE CHANGES ARE SEEN AS PREFERABLE TO DESIGN SOLUTIONS (BERMS, DEPRESSED ROADWAYS) TO THE PROBLEMS OF NOISE AND POLLUTION. STRUCTURES DRAW LESS CRITICISM IF AESTHETICS ARE INCLUDED IN DESIGN. PUBLIC RELATIONS CAN RELIEVE OBJECTIONS TO CONSTRUCTION NOISE AND DISRUPTION. A FINAL SUGGESTION IS THE INTEGRATION OF COMMERCIAL DEVELOPMENT WITH HIGHWAY DEVELOPMENT ALONG MILE-WIDE STRIPS.
