Abstract: THE RESULTS OF RECENTLY CONDUCTED STUDIES BY THE BUREAU OF MINES TO EVALUATE THE NATURE AND EXTENT OF LAND USE CONFLICTS AND ENVIRONMENTAL DAMAGE RESULTING FROM MINERAL INDUSTRY ACTIVITIES ARE REPORTED. THE LAND USE CONFLICTS FALL INTO 5 GROUPS: SUBSIDENCE, WATER POLLUTION, AIR POLLUTION-BURNING AND NONBURNING COAL REFUSE BANKS, MINE FIRES, AND RECLAMATION. THE DEPLETION OF RESOURCE AVAILABILITY DUE TO POPULATION GROWTH AND URBANIZATION ARE DISCUSSED.
