The healthcare sector has been rapidly growing in terms of both workforce and infrastructure, which have direct impacts on energy consumption and air emissions. While the healthcare sector is uniquely positioned to lead the way in environmental sustainability, sustainable transportation programs have received inadequate attention. Challenges include the need to serve many differing types of populations, accommodate patients, visitors and staff, and have staff with widely varying job descriptions and shifts, including overnight. This exploratory study developed surveys and interviews of healthcare professionals and workers at three outpatient clinics in the Chicago metropolitan area, with a focus on employees’ commuting patterns and the factors affecting their mode choices. The study also included spatial analysis of these factors in order to ascertain if the geographical location of the clinics affected commuting patterns. Unique characteristics pertaining to work-related travels of healthcare employees, such as various shift hours and multiple work locations, were also examined. Through both qualitative and quantitative analyses, this study provided insights into potential opportunities of reducing transportation-related impacts from healthcare institutions in Chicago and beyond.
