Using data from a revealed preference survey conducted in the Yangtze River Delta urban agglomeration of China in 2012, the paper first generate the latent attitudinal variables hypothesized to affect annual mode preference through factor analysis. Six general travel attitude factors and three generic mode perception factors were identified. A fractional multinomial logit model was adopted to estimate the allocation of trips across three main intercity modes in the past year and the authors found that intercity business travelers would prefer to use the mode more if they considered it as most convenient and reliable. Besides, the general travel attitude factors “travel utility” and “car affinity” are positively affecting the share of intercity high-speed train trips and car trips respectively. Business travelers with fun-oriented attitude are likely to take intercity bus more. In contrast, if they have travel pressure or hold the overall positive perception toward intercity travel, they would use intercity bus less. Moreover, car ownership and city type are also influence the major mode used. Attitudinal variables in the full model add important explanatory power in explaining the proportion of mode use and some market strategies could be applied to enhance the service for the intercity business travelers in the Yangtze River Delta urban agglomeration.
