Availability: Transportation Research Board Business Office 500 Fifth Street, NW Abstract: The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) is once again making profitable use of calcium chloride (CaCl₂) stabilization of gravel roads, reducing maintenance upkeep of gravel roads by 3 to 8 fold and reducing costs by 2 to 4 fold. The use of CaCl₂ as a dust palliative for roads has been around since about the 1890s, and its stabilization benefits have long been known also, at least since 1938 in the case of VDOT. This paper presents background on the use of CaCl₂ at VDOT, and how VDOT is going about facilitating the beneficial use of CaCl₂ for gravel road stabilization. The culmination to attempt to bring this treatment statewide in a modern way includes especially the development of a simple and inexpensive test method to verify the CaCl₂ content of treated aggregate and simple guidance on its use.
Supplemental Notes: This paper was sponsored by TRB committee AFS90 Chemical, Mechanical, and Asphalt Stabilization.
