Abstract:

The paper presents an investigation into activity-travel scheduling processes of older people. The empirical investigation uses an econometric model of activity-travel scheduling choices and datasets collected in the National Capital Region (NCR) of Canada in 2011. This paper presents daily activity-travel scheduling behaviour considering dynamic time-space constrained scheduling processes. Empirical modelling revealed that the variety seeking behaviour of older people in activity-travel reduces with age. Spatial accessibility to various activity locations was found to be the critical influential factor defining out-of-home activity type choices and daily activity-travel patterns. Males were found to have higher marginal utility of spending time at home before first trip than females. Older people tend to terminate their out-of-home activities earlier in the day. Travel time was found to be critical in choosing activity location.
