Travel demand modeling traditionally relies on travel surveys to understand travel behavior and to analyze travel patterns in terms of origin-destination (OD) flow to support transportation planning and policy decisions. However, travel surveys have become very expensive to conduct, and the response rate continuously decreases as the public becomes fatigued from being over-surveyed. The accuracy and the level of detail of travel forecasting are inevitably affected by these data issues. Recently large-scale mobile phone data have become an appealing data source to transportation professionals, as the mobile phone users have rapidly increased and abundant data have become available. This paper demonstrates how mobile phone data can be utilized to analyze OD travel flow dynamics, including methodologies for extracting time-space trajectories of travelers from mobile trace data and validation comparison of the spatial and temporal distributions of the derived travel demand with other data sources.
