Abstract:

At present, the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) designs open-graded friction course (OGFC) mixtures using a pie plate visual draindown method (FM 5-588). In this method, the optimum asphalt binder content (OBC) is determined based on a visual assessment of the asphalt binder distribution of three mixture samples placed on pie plates with pre-determined asphalt binder contents. In order to eliminate the human subjectivity involved in this method, FDOT has developed a preliminary system for determining the OBC using digital images of the pie plate samples. The objective of this research effort reported here is to validate the image-based method and provide FDOT with technical guidance to enhance its accuracy and reliability. The investigation included the testing of nineteen OGFC mix designs which comprised a total of 228 samples prepared from 120 granite and 108 oolitic limestone aggregate sources based on both the current Florida pie plate test method (FM 5-588) and its image-based version. Experimental results were analyzed in three steps: (1) preprocessing of images, (2) classification to identify appropriate imaging parameters, and (3) statistical analysis to develop correlations between the selected imaging parameters and the measured asphalt binder content. Three pie plate image-based classification parameters were found to be relevant in the estimation of the asphalt binder content: the percentage of black pixels (PBP), the connectivity of black pixels (CBP), and the form factor (FF). The results demonstrated that the combination of PBP, CBP and FF can provide satisfactory correlations with the asphalt binder content.
