Abstract:

This issue contains 20 papers concerned with pedestrians. Specific topics addressed in this issue include: pedestrian performance in shared-space environments; a smartphone application to support visually impaired pedestrians at signalized intersection crossings; pedestrian-vehicle traffic conflicts; automated classification of pedestrian gender and age; driver compliance with pedestrian yield right-of-way laws; the Canadian Pedestrian Crossing Control Guide; improving pedestrian accessibility to light rail; pedestrian weaving zones; and the use of computer vision to diagnose pedestrian safety issues. Other topics addressed in this issue include: improving the cyclist and pedestrian environment while maintaining vehicle throughput; the effect of left-turn operational mode on pedestrian safety; pedestrian crash hot spots and risk factors for injury severity; pedestrian red-time crossing behavior; integrating bicycling and walking facilities into urban infrastructure; the cost complete streets; the effect of advance yield markings and symbolic signs on vehicle-pedestrian conflicts; the effectiveness of audible and tactile heading cues at complex intersections for pedestrians who are blind; a roadway design survey of San Francisco Bay Area pedestrians, drivers, bicyclists, and transit users; pedestrian crash risk on boundary roadways; and sight distance for disabled pedestrians at crossings.
