Abstract:

The purpose of this study is to model rail energy conservation by the inclusion of varying levels of coasting into the operating regimes of the trains. A case study was conducted on the Flatbush branch of Long Island Rail Road between Jamaica and Atlantic Terminal, which also includes the East New York and Nostrand Avenue stations. A mathematical model comprising a deterministic simulator was developed and determined positions along the alignment where coasting should begin and end while using the momentum of the train and the alignment geometry to optimize fuel consumption. A sensitivity analysis of the results showed that significant amounts of energy can be saved while adhering to the schedule. Since there are no additional costs associated with this method, it could be implemented immediately to reduce operating costs and reduce the negative effects associated with the use of fossil fuels.
