Abstract:
This paper presents a review of the National Park Foundation Transportation Scholars program, documenting its long-term positive effect on the National Park Service and the scholars. Case studies were made of three parks that had hosted a scholar. For each park, the final report created by the scholar was reviewed for recommendations made. Then interviews of park personnel were conducted to determine if the recommendations had been implemented. A survey of program alumni provided insight into the effect of the program on participants’ careers. Many scholar recommendations were implemented. However, the recommendations may not have been the most effective aspect of the program. Rather, fresh ideas, transportation-related expertise, enthusiasm for the project, and the ability to focus on transportation issues may be some of the significant program benefits to the parks. The results of the alumni survey showed that a majority held positions in a federal agency. Trends established this program as a conduit for young talent to work within a federal agency.
